The Chinese have an unwritten rule governing renovation works. Do not renovate if a member of the household is pregnant. There are so many horror stories of the consequence of breaking this rule, that most Chinese simply accept it without asking too many questions. They simply accept that it is better to be safe than sorry. But why is this so? Is there a reason for this taboo? No one knows the real reason but here are a few that makes sense to me. A house that is undergoing renovation is not a safe place – pregnant or not. Accidents are more likely to happen. The center of gravity is shifted in a pregnant person and the likelihood of falling down is higher. Furthermore, pregnancy makes the ligaments softer and the joints less stable which increases the risk of injury. During the renovation works, the pregnant person may get involved in moving items about. Some research shows that there is a higher potential of miscarriages in who do strenuous labor. It is common knowledge that if the pregnant mother smokes, it increases the baby’s risk of fetal injury, premature birth and low birth weight. A renovation environment is dusty and unhealthy much like smoking. While it may not exactly be the same, it is better to take precautionary measures. There is growing evidence to suggest that babies in the womb are aware of external noise. In particular, loud noises have shown to stimulate the fetus directly by causing changes in the heart rate. Other than direct noise, the fetus is also not shielded from the mother’s response to stress. The physical change that the mother experience may be transmitted to the fetus causing a threat to proper fetal development. A study conducted on Japan with over 1000 births produce evidence to suggest that noisy areas have a greater chance of producing low-weight babies. But what if you must carry out the renovation works? What if it just cannot be delayed? Is there an alternative way? The answer is quite simple. Simply move the pregnant person to another location during the renovation period. That is all you need to do.
