The Rudiments of the Yin Yang

By: fongsuimy

To master Chinese metaphysics, you must have a strong command of the principle of the Yin Yang. In addition you also need to know the Five Elements and the Ba Gua.
The ancient Chinese believe that at the start, there was a situation of vacuum which they label Wu Ji and symbolize it with a circle.
Rising from this condition of emptiness are two energies that are equal yet diagramatically divergent. They are called Yin (submissive) and Yang (dominating) and they interact continuously, with neither one overcoming the other.
The circular Tai Qi symbol implies that the interaction between Yin and Yang is perennial. Yin and Yang is next shown as two tadpole like shape to show that when Yang grows, Yin contracts and when Yin grows, Yang contracts. Next the black spot within the head of the black tadpole shape infer that Yin starts to appear when Yang is at its strongest.
Furthermore, the equal portions of the Yin and Yang pieces suggest that both are equally important and neither is more important that the other.
The concept of Yin and Yang can be used to classify everything in life. For example, active or Yang traits would include day, summer, sun, motion, white (color), angular (shape) and shinny (surfaces) while passive or Yin traits would include night, winter, moon, stillness, black, smooth and dull.
From now to the end of this article, I will explain how the concept of the Yin Yang is applied to seasons, plants, objects, human beings, the Five Elements etc.
What about seasons? The chilly winter is naturally Yin while the steamy summer is instinctively Yang. Since spring is a transition from cold to warm it is called increasing Yang. Autumn on the other is a transition from warm to cold and is called increasing Yin.
The principle of Yin and Yang can be applied to objects. Yin objects are those that are small, rounded, dull in appearance or cold to the touch. On the other hand, Yang objects are those that are large, angular in shape, shinny or warm to the touch.
We can classify wood into Yin or yang. Plants that are tall and large are Yang while those that are small and short are Yin. The leaves of a plant can also be categorized. For example rounded leaves are Yin while narrow leaves are Yin.
In human beings, the left brain which guide logic is Yang while the right brain which guide creativity is Yin. Yang people tend to display boastful, loud, aggressive and impulsive characteristics while Yin people tend to be shy, quiet, soft-spoken and patient.
What about the Yin and Yang of the human body? The front is Yin while the back is Yang. The part below the waist is Yin while the part above is Yang. The internal organs of the heart, lung, liver, spleen and kidney are Yin while the small and large intestine, gall bladder, stomach and bladder are Yang.
In a home, places that should be quiet, need lesser lighting and for concentration or resting are Yin. This include the bedroom, study and storeroom. The others light the living, kitchen, dining and family area are classified as Yang.
What about the Yin and Yang of the Five Elements? The Five Elements can also be categorized into Yin and Yang. For example swift flowing water is Yang while still water is Yin.
Is a river Yin or Yang. It depends. When you compare it to the nearby mountains, water is yang while mountain is Yin. However when the water flows quickly e.g. in straight courses or waterfall it is considered Yang. When the water flows slowly e.g. in meandering course or lake it is considered Yin.
