So you want to buy a website?

By: Zero

In today’s fast track internet world we all hear of people buying and selling websites. What most do not know is the world behind this scene. When someone wants to buy these sites a lot of research should be preformed as there are many pitfalls out there. Some of which I cover in this article. I will say this now this is in one no way a comprehensive guide. This will cover the basics of what everyone should do before purchasing any site no matter what the given niche is.

The first thing you need to do is find a website you wish to buy. There are many sources where sites are bought and sold on a daily basis. Some of these sites are solely for this purpose others like Web Talk Forums cater to webmasters in general. No matter where you buy the site research some to see how the place works. Make sure you know the rules and guidelines for buying.

After you feel comfortable with the site now you need to find a website you interested in. Again look around you may find what you want right off. Still take some time to look around and research the market. You may find another person selling the same kind of site you want cheaper or you may find a better deal in general.

Ok so you have found the type of site you want what’s next? Do you go ahead and buy it? The answer is no. The first thing you want to do is research the seller. Does he have more then one site for sale? Does he have positive feedback from respected members of the community he is selling in? Does the deal look to good to be true? Do you like the site as is or will you have to make changes to it? All of these factors should be looked into before you even consider buying it.

Now that you know the seller and how the market works you can proceed to research the site itself. The first thing you should check on is the domain name. Does it match the site? What’s the registration date? Has it been transferred a lot? All these things can be checked via a simple whois on the domain. I know this seems like a no brainer but I have seen people buy sites without it at all. This is a big mistake in my opinion.

Research done on the market, domain, and seller Should you go ahead and buy now? Again the answer is no. You still need to look at the traffic of said site. You need to look at the stats the seller has posted. You have to compare hits to visits and the quality of traffic also. Who looks at this site? Do they come back or is it a one time thing? If comments are allowed in the site do people who come to it comment? What are the comments? All of this needs to be researched before you purchase the site. A site with 100 million hits a month does not do you any good if those people do not return or are not interested in your site to begin with.

Ok now you have done the research and the site looks good. It is time to put in a price you are willing to pay for it. Most of the sites allow auction type bidding. The seller may also set a BIN (Buy It Now) price. Which one you use depends on a lot of factors. Like is the site precisely what you want or does it require changes? Is the Bin to high in your estimation? How much work has the seller actually done? How many contributing members does the site have? Answer these questions then see if you wish to still place a bid or BIN the site.

In short if you follow these simple things and take your time to research you can avoid a lot of costly mistakes. I know I follow them and have yet to have a full fledged failure. All it takes is time and patience and the desire to succeed. I hope you all the best in your online endeavors.
