Ballet Barre Is Crucial For Ballet Dance

Ballet Barre is an important part of ballet dance as it is used for various exercise series, training classes and acts as a tentative partner for ballet dancers.

Ballet Barre is actually a handrail that is used in ballet during warm up exercises. This term refers more widely to those stretching exercise series that basically form foundation of the ballet training for every level. Barre are simple exercises that are fundamentally focused on constructing grace and the poise that is necessary for ballet dancing. These ballet exercises are repetitive and are done slowly in order to increase the strength gradually. Moreover, these exercises teach the correct placement of the body simultaneously.

Construction Of Ballet Barre

The ballet barre may be either mounted over the wall or free standing. The wall mounted ballet barre as evident from the name are fixed to the walls so that a firmer support is established. The free standing ballet barre allow the dancer to set the bar according to the preferred height. They are adjustable and therefore can be easily transported in cars. The ballet barre can be made up of metal or wood and can be availed online quite easily. They usually stand up till the waist height. One can choose from three basic styles of the ballet barre, that are the non-adjustable single, removable/ adjustable single and non-adjustable double.

Ballet Barre Exercises

Any of the ballet barre exercise will be quite repetitive and slow. It is so because these exercises are meant for building the strength gradually while teaching correct placement to the body. Ballet barre basically makes up significant part of the dancer’s class if one is a beginner. In fact, barre are very useful because they help in preparation with the purpose of partnering.

They provide with ample support that any partner would require in ballet dancing and thus can be of help to the dancer. Barre are very crucial for those dancers who have just begun as their ankles are not so strong to provide them with the required support. Owing to these reasons, these ballet barre are of immense help to ballet dancers.

Some of the basic movements of ballet barre routine include:

1. Plie: These are the initial exercises and are performed in order to develop balance.

2. Tendus: This exercise is useful to the dancers in mastering the arches and to compel the instep in outward directions.

3. Degage: This is a continuation of the tendus and aids in the suppleness of ankle joint and targets toe strength.

4. Frappe: This helps the dancers in developing balance and strength as the foot is elevated. It also helps in strengthening their instep.

5. Rond de Jambe: This exercise is of two types, rond de jambe e terre and rond de jambe en l’air. The former helps in perfecting the ballet dancer’s balance whereas the latter helps in relaxing the hip joints and turning the legs in an outward position thereby preparing the ballet dancer for a change of dance position.

6. Developpe: This is another exercise that helps the dancer to maintain their balance while dancing and thereby give great performances.

7. Fondu: This exercise helps the dancers to get used to high jumps in the air that is a part of their dance style. It strengthens the muscles of their legs as the knees are bent slowly.

8. Grand Battlement: This is the last exercise that is performed on the ballet barre and is done after all the stretching exercises. Major focus of this exercise is to align the hips and the legs while raising the legs very high with the supporting leg remaining straight.

All these exercises are a major part of the training sessions of ballet classes and are performed on ballet barre.
