Mineral Wool Insulation

By: Eric Minden

Each type of insulation is used for different reasons, for example, fiberglass insulation
is used in homes to control temperature and create sound barriers. Generally, fiberglass
is used in the walls and floors of the home or business in which it is needed. Cotton
insulation is also used in homes and businesses only cotton controls temperature and
creates a better sound barrier than fiberglass.

Once insulation has been installed in the walls or floors where it is needed, there are
few health risks that will show up. The health risks are seen more when the insulation
is being installed. Fiberglass insulation is made up of glass fibers, if these fibers
are inhaled, you could have medical problems later in life.

With the use of cotton, the insulation is made up of recycled material that has been
collected from garment industries. Since these fibers are natural, they have fewer health
risks that accompany them. These cotton fibers may make a mess in the area in which they
are used, but these fibers can be inhaled and will pose no danger to the person doing
the installation.

There are other types of insulation, mineral wool and plastic fiber which will be discussed
later. Mineral wool insulation refers to three types of insulation that are all made up
of raw materials. These types include fiberglass, rock wool, and slag wool insulation.

Most of the mineral wool insulation used in America is slag wool which is stiff and
brittle. This type of insulation also helps with sound proofing and preventing the
spread of fires. When a fire starts in the home or in a business, the insulation helps
fuel the fire. Since the wool fibers are non combustible and can withhold temperatures
of over 1800'F the fire is not able to spread, thanks to help from the insulation.

Mineral wool insulation is not only used in homes and businesses, it is also used in
ships and mobile homes. This type of insulation helps with the noise barrier that is
needed in homes, offices, mobile homes, and even ships, as well as cooking appliances.

There are benefits of mineral wool insulation which include more than just the sound
reduction. These benefits also include energy savings in the home. Heating and cooling
bills can be outrageously high these days, with mineral wool insulation being properly
used through out the home or business, energy costs will be noticeably reduced.

Although mineral wool insulation is generally 15-20% more expensive than other types
of insulation the price seems to be well worth it when it comes to sound proofing and
reducing the spread of fires in your home.

However, before you rush and buy this product you should know there are some health risks
associated with the installation of the insulation. These include upper respiratory
irritation and even infection after the fibers have been inhaled. To reduce these risks
you should wear a dust mask that will cover your nose and mouth so that you will have a
lesser chance of inhaling the fibers. Otherwise, you should be able to use this product
with no problem..
