Milk Containers Are Now Being Used As Insulation

By: Eric Minden

We have discussed many of the different types of insulation including fiberglass, cotton,
and the different types of mineral wool insulation. Another type of insulation that is
in the form of a batt is known as plastic fiber insulation.

Plastic fiber insulation is made up of polyethylene terephthalate or PET. This is most
commonly seen as plastic milk containers. These fibers are thick which allows the batt
to be soft and have the same appearance as high density fiberglass.

Since the product consists of a thick plastic the product is meant to be flame retardant,
meaning it will resist flame. However, since it is plastic it will melt at seemingly low
temperatures which comes as a major disadvantage for those using this type of insulation.

Plastic fiber insulation is generally easy to work with once you get it cut. Since it is
made from the same material as milk containers it is harder to cut with standard tools
on the job site. This is just another disadvantage to using plastic fiber insulation.

However, with the bad there is always good. Plastic fiber insulation is good for the
environment as well as your health. Plastic fiber can't save your life, but it can keep
you from inhaling the loose fibers that are in the air while installing the insulation.
Also, because it is plastic it is generally non irritating to the skin, so working with
it should not be a problem to the installer.

Another good aspect of this insulation is that it is made from recycled materials, which
means that those milk containers you recycled last month, are likely to made in to
insulation and used in someones home or even used for aviation construction. Knowing that
this is environmentally friendly helps give many users a peaceful state of mind.
