After converting an image to giclee canvas, printmakers have the choice of enhancing them. Canvas is a very dynamic material, and can be enhanced in multiple ways. The most popular way to accentuate a giclee print is by painting the print to give it character and an authentic look. Oil and acrylic paints are the two most common paints used to enhance the print. Be sure to print on water resistant canvas in order to avoid ink separation, and remember to wait until the original print is dry before applying any paint. Giclee needs to always be covered with a varnish after printing to avoid aging and yellowing. There are varnishes specifically made for giclee that are able to applied to this job. Coating can be applied to giclee art prints with a special coating machine, manual roller or spray gun. The style of application is up to the printmaker to decide. However, it is advised that high volume coating be done using a coating machine to prevent laborious labor and possible errors. When the varnish has been applied to the giclee print, the printmaker may then apply paint or gel to embellish the appearance and feel of the canvas. There are a number of water-based gels available that dry on clear. These gels may be easier for the user to apply than actual paint, and give the prints a beautiful finish. Another popular technique that can be applied is the adding of acrylic paint to these gels and then applying them directly onto the canvas. This creates a translucent mixture that is perfect for improving light areas of the print where the colors can be observed through the gel. Also note that enhancing giclee prints is not restricted to colored prints, as black and white prints can be enhanced by utilizing these methods as well.
