Understanding current political issues and forming your own opinions on them is an important, but enjoyable aspect of life. Politics affects all of our lives, and every day politicians fill up the news with new stories. But maybe you don’t fully understand exactly what all of these politicians are talking about. So how does one go about becoming more politically informed? You may think that it will be really hard and that you’re going to have to read all these long, boring books, but that’s not the case. Becoming politically informed can actually be really fun and easy. This guide will help you become more politically informed in three easy steps. 1. Join a political discussion forum! PolitiCity.net is a great place to start. By joining, you can participate in debates with other members who are also interested in politics. The website is entirely free, and even has a chat room where you can chat with politically informed people in real time! You’d be surprised how much you can learn by just being around people who share your interests. So be sure to join a forum and make some friends while you’re there. 2. Turn on the news! You don’t have to keep it turned on all day—usually, news stations repeat the same stories over and over again. So during the commercials of your favorite shows, just flip to the news real quick, and find out what’s going on in the world. (Warning: Avoid spoof news, such as The Colbert Report or The Daily Show. These are not reliable sources of news and are usually very biased. If you do decide to watch these programs, do not let them shape your political views. Stick to reliable news stations such as CNN, MSNBC, or FOX.) Once you start watching some news stations, pretty soon, you’ll start forming some questions in your head. Maybe one of the correspondents used a phrase you didn’t understand. This brings us to our final step... 3. Ask questions! The people with the most answers are the people who ask the most questions. Don’t be afraid to ask a friend or a teacher what their opinion is on a certain issue. You can start by simply asking your parents what their political affiliation is (e.g., Republican or Democrat).You can also ask your questions online in a political discussion forum and get opinions from a whole bunch of different people! Ask a variety of people for their opinions. Don’t rely on one person for all of your answers. You’ll never become an open-minded thinker that way. You want to get all sides to the issue, and only then you can start forming your own opinions. And that’s it. Eventually, you will want to start reading some books you are interested in and possibly subscribe to a magazine such as Time or The Wall Street Journal. If you are in college, or plan on attending college, you may even be interested in taking a few courses in politics. But until then, these three steps should get you started. Just remember: find people who are interested in politics and never stop asking questions!
