Auckland is widely known as the City of Sails but in reality it is surrounded by a necklace of green. On the southern end of New Zealand's North Island, Auckland sits on a narrow isthmus between the beautiful blue waters of the Waitemata and Manukau harbours. A verdant and living green cloak of rainforest covers the surrounding hills with the peaks of dozens of dormant volcanic cones protruding through the green carpet of leaves. It has a temperate climate and a heart that is described as beating to a Polynesian rhythm. Wherever travellers stay in Auckland they are never far from memorable landscapes, beaches, walks, great food and wine, shopping and nightlife, and idyllic islands like Waiheke.
